Fence Installation Chesapeake

Chesapeake requires a fence permit for all new fences and replacements that change the fence line or height. Replacing an existing fence in the same location on an interior lot does not require a permit. Permits are obtained through the Chesapeake Department of Development and Permits.

Chesapeake allows 6-foot privacy fences in side and rear yards, 4 feet in front yards. Corner lots have sight triangle requirements similar to Virginia Beach. Agricultural zones allow taller farm fencing.

Chesapeake has mixed soil — clay-heavy in Great Bridge and Hickory, sandy in Western Branch. Clay soil holds moisture and can accelerate post rot; we use extra gravel drainage at the base of each post hole.

Chesapeake is inland enough to avoid the worst coastal winds, but still sees hurricane-force gusts. Tornadoes are more common here than in Virginia Beach. Our deep-post construction handles both.

Greenbrier and Great Bridge have extensive HOA-controlled neighborhoods. Hickory Farm, Edinburgh, and Grassfield are all HOA communities with specific fence requirements. We work directly with HOA management companies.

Chesapeake lots are larger — 0.3–0.5 acres is common. Backyard fences of 120–200 linear feet are typical. Rural properties on the edge of the city may need 300+ linear feet.

Chesapeake has fewer dedicated fence contractors than Virginia Beach. Many general contractors offer fencing as an add-on. We specialize in fences — faster turnaround and better pricing.
