Fence Installation Portsmouth

Portsmouth requires a fence permit for all fences over 4 feet and any fence on a corner lot. The permit office is at 801 Crawford Street. Processing takes 7–10 business days — plan accordingly.

Portsmouth allows 6-foot fences in rear and side yards, 4 feet in front yards. Olde Towne historic district has stricter guidelines — privacy fences may require approval from the Historic Preservation Commission.

Portsmouth soil is predominantly sandy with areas of fill dirt in newer developments. Churchland and Western Branch have more consistent soil. Olde Towne can have unexpected debris in post holes from 300+ years of development.

Portsmouth shares Norfolk's coastal exposure but is slightly more sheltered. Flooding in Olde Towne and Cradock is a concern during heavy rain. We assess drainage before recommending post depth.

HOAs are less prevalent in Portsmouth than in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach, but newer developments like River Pointe and Churchland Crossing have fence guidelines. We review all requirements before construction.

Portsmouth lots vary widely — from compact Olde Towne parcels to spacious Churchland lots. Typical backyard fences range from 60–150 linear feet.
